| Gary Moore's biography 1952-1969 |
|---|
| 1952 : Robert William Gary Moore is born on April 4th in Belfast ,Northern Ireland. His father, Robert Moore, was a local concert promoter,
so Gary grew up listening to many Irish bands, playing live, the country,
rock and pop hits of that time. He, also, liked to listen to the family
records in his home. He grew up in Castlereagh Road, off the Upper Newtownards
Road in east Belfast.1958 : Gary' s first time on stage! Dressed in shorts and standing on a chair to reach the microphone, he sings a song called "Sugartime" with a showband, at the Queen' s Hall venue. 1962 : His father, buys from a musician his first guitar, a huge acoustic contraption, German Framus model. The strings were very hard and it was difficult to play, but Gary learned some Shadows tunes in the first week! He taught himself some chords from books, watched other people play, listened to records and picked up the melodies! Although he is left-handed, he started playing as a right-handed, because he watched other people do so!
1963 : Performs solo as "Little Gary". 1965 : Plays in a childhood band called "The beat boys" at his fathers club outside Belfast. Later on, they performed in hotels and ballrooms, playing "anything the public wants". Like many others, he was turned on to rock and roll first through hearing Elvis Presley, and then via The Beatles. Seeing the likes of Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in his hometown in the mid-60s opened up to him the rich world of The Blues. 1966 : Buys his first good guitar, a Fender Telecaster, after persuading his father to buy on credit. His father accepts, under the request to join a band called "Dave and the Diamonds". His father was paying two years for this guitar, but later Gary paid him back. 1967 : Gary used to travel to Dublin to play with a band called "The Method". It was there that the bass player of Skid Row asked Gary to join the band. 1968
: Gary watches
Skid Row performing live and likes them, so he joins the band, after
moving to Dublin. The lead singer of the band is Phil
Lynott, who becomes a close friend to Gary. The other members are Noel "Nollaig" Bridgemore
(drums), Brendan
"Brush" Shiels (bass) and Bernhard Cheevers (guitar ), who
afterwards leaves the band. 1969 : Skid Row release their first single "New faces Old places" and play as support group for Fleetwood Mac. Peter Green (guitarist of Fleetwood Mac and Gary' s idol) is impressed with Gary's playing and helps Skid Row get a deal with a record company. Phil Lynott has problems with his voice and takes a break from the group, which now performs as a trio. When he returns, he is informed that there' s no room for him in the band now. |
